The climate of Izmail is continental, with cold winters and hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in the extreme southwest of Ukraine, in the historical region of Bessarabia, near the border with Moldova and Romania, in the Danube delta area.
Precipitation is quite scarce, we are in fact in a semi-arid area which also includes the eastern coast of Romania.
Winter is cold and gray. In stable periods, fog can form. Snowfalls are quite frequent but generally not abundant. Sometimes, cold spells can occur, during which the temperature can drop to -15 °C (5 °F) or even below. The coldest record is -25.4 °C (-13.7 °F) and was set in January 1963.
Summer is hot and sunny, though thunderstorms can break out in the afternoon.
At times there can be very hot periods, during which the temperature reaches or exceeds 35 °C (95 °F). The highest record is 40.7 °C (105.3 °F) and was set in July 2007.
