Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Sanliurfa (often called Urfa, in the past Edessa) is
subtropical semi-arid, with quite mild, rainy winters and very hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in the south-east of Turkey, 550 meters (1,800 feet) above sea level, in Upper Mesopotamia (al-Jazīra).
Nearby is the archaeological site of Göbekli Tepe.
The
winter is quite mild, and is milder than in the cities of the area located further north (see Diyarbakir), however, there may be cold periods, in which the temperature drops below freezing and it can snow.
Despite the altitude, the
summer is particularly hot. We are in the far south of Turkey, where the average maximum temperatures in July and August are close to 40 °C (104 °F). The record is also among the highest in all of Turkey: 47 °C (116 °F), set in July 2000.
