The climate of Denizli can be defined as
Mediterranean, given that the winters are mild and rainy, and the summers hot and sunny. However, there are some continental characteristics, and in particular, the summer is very hot.
The city is located in the south-west of Turkey, at the foot of the mountains, at an altitude varying between 300 and 650 meters (985 and 2,100 feet), the weather station being at 425 metres (1,400 ft). We are in the valley of the Meander river (or Büyük Menderes), particularly hot in summer as it is closed between the mountains.
Nearby are the remains of the ancient city of
Laodicea on the Lycus. Further north, on the other hand, there are the remains of the city of
Hierapolis, and nearby
Pamukkale, a natural site with travertine terraces and thermal waters.
Even though the
winter is quite mild, there can be cold periods, during which the temperature can drop to around freezing or below, and it can even snow. In February 2004 and January 2015, the temperature dropped to -10.5 °C (13 °F).
As mentioned,
summer is particularly hot. Additionally, there may be heat waves, with highs of 40 °C (104 °F) or more. In July 2007, the temperature reached 44 °C (111 °F), and the average maximum temperature was 38.9 °C (102 °F).
