Climate chart - Canakkale
The climate of Çanakkale can be defined as transitional Mediterranean, given that the winters are quite mild, but with cold periods, while the summers are hot and sunny. Most of the rain falls from October to March.
The city is located in the far west of Turkey, on the eastern coast of the Dardanelles Strait, which separates the European and Asian parts of Turkey. About 20 km (12 mi) to the southwest are the ruins of the ancient city of Troy.

Even though the winter is quite mild, in this northern area of the Aegean Sea, there can sometimes be cold waves, with temperatures around freezing even during the day and snowfall. In February 2004 the temperature dropped to -11 °C (12 °F).
In summer there can be very hot periods, with highs of 35 °C (95 °F) and more, although less intense than on the southern coast of Turkey. In July 2007 and July 2023, the temperature reached 39 °C (102 °F). In July 2023 the average maximum was 34.4 °C (93.9 °F).
