Climate chart - Hambantota
The climate of Hambantota is tropical, hot all year round. There is a rainy season from September to December, which has a maximum in November, and another less evident in April and May, while in the rest of the year, the rains are quite rare.

Hambantota is a city of 57,000 inhabitants, located on the south-east coast of Sri Lanka, in the Southern Province, at 6 degrees north latitude.

Image of Hambantota

Together with the northwest, the southeast coast of Sri Lanka is a relatively low-rain zone. In particular, during the period when the sun passes to the zenith (April-May), there is a certain increase in rainfall, but then, from mid-May to September, the period of the southwest monsoon, the rains are discharged on the western side, while here they are rare.

Sri Lanka is in the path of tropical cyclones. Typically, on the Indian Ocean north of the Equator, cyclones occur from April to December, although Sri Lanka is usually only affected in November and December, and more rarely in May. In fact, usually in mid-May, sometimes there can be heavy rains, caused by cyclones that form in the Bay of Bengal, even if they are at the beginning of their life. However, since the sea is warm all year round, in theory they can also form from January to March, perhaps in a light form (such as tropical storms).

Best Time

The best time for a beach holiday in Hambantota and the south-east coast of Sri Lanka is from January to March.
In April, rains and showers increase, due to the passage of the sun at the zenith, even though the quantity is not generally significant. May is generally a dry month, but sometimes, as mentioned, in the middle of the month, it can rain a lot due to the passage of a tropical cyclone in the distance, in the Bay of Bengal.
From mid-May to September, as mentioned, the rains are rare, however, there is often wind and the sea is rough. In some years, besides, already in September it can rain a lot.
From October to December is the rainiest period, also, there is the risk of cyclones passing.
