Climate chart - Castellon
The climate of Castellón de la Plana (and of the nearby city of Villarreal) is Mediterranean, with mild, relatively rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
The city is the capital of the province of the same name and is located a few kilometers from the Spanish east coast, in the Valencian Community.

The average temperature of the coldest month (January) is of 11 °C (52 °F), that of the warmest month (August) is of 26 °C (79 °F).

Precipitation amounts to 470 millimeters (18.5 inches) per year: it is therefore quite scarce. In particular, the winter is quite dry. In autumn, however, sometimes there can be abundant rains concentrated in a short time.

Castellón de la Plana

The winter, from December to February, is mild. There are sunny periods alternating with rainy periods (which, however, are quite rare).
Sometimes, there may also be cold periods brought by air masses from Eastern Europe, though the effects are not very evident. Not by chance, snow is extremely rare (the last snowfall with accumulation occurred in February 1954). In the inland areas of the province, however, snowfalls are more frequent.
On the coldest nights of the year, the temperature typically drops to 0/2 °C (32/36 °F). The coldest record is -7.5 °C (18.5 °F) and dates back to February 1956, but otherwise, the temperature only dropped to -4.5 °C (24 °F) in the cold month of January 1985, and from 2000 to 2020, it dropped to -2 °C (28.5 °F) January 2005.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with rare thunderstorms. During the day, the sea breeze makes the heat more bearable, but nights are muggy.
There may be some particularly hot periods, usually of short duration. On the hottest days of the year, the temperature typically reaches 36/37 °C (97/99 °F). The heat record is 40.5 °C (105 °F) and was recorded in July 2009.

On average, there are around 2,755 sunshine hours per year. Winter is also quite sunny.

The sea temperature ranges between 13 °C (55 °F) and 26 °C (79 °F). The sea is warm enough for swimming from July to September.

Best Time

The best time for a beach holiday on the coast near Castellón de la Plana (for example in Benicàssim) is the summer, from June to August. The water temperature is comfortable enough from July to September; however, in September, which is still a good month (especially in the first half), the first Atlantic depressions begin to affect this area. May and June are sunny months, but the sea is still a bit cool, especially in May, when it is actually a bit cold.
Although good weather is not always guaranteed, spring and autumn are ideal for visiting the city, since it can be very hot in summer.
