Sutherland is a town located in the South African Republic, in the south-west, at 1,450 meters (4,700 feet) above sea level, and has a semi-desert temperate climate, but with remarkable temperature variations between night and day.
Due to its southern position (and therefore exposed to cold waves of Antarctic origin), and at high altitude, Sutherland is one of the coldest places in South Africa.
The coldest record, set in July 2003, is as low as -16 °C (3 °F).
Snowfalls in winter occur often enough, though they are typically light because of the dry climate.
Although nights are cool, it can get very hot during the day in summer, from November to March, when the temperature can reach 35 °C (95 °F). In January 2016, it reached 38 °C (100 °F).
Near the city, at 1,850 meters (6,000 feet), we find the South African Astronomical Observatory, which hosts the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT): this area was chosen because the skies are often clear and the air is clean.
