The climate of Pretoria is subtropical, with mild, dry winters (during which it can get cold at night) and hot, sunny summers (during which thunderstorms can break out).
The city is located in the north-east of the Republic of South Africa, at 1,300 meters (4,250 feet) above sea level, about 40 km (25 mi) north of Johannesburg, and is part of the metropolitan area of Tshwane.
Compared to Johannesburg, the temperatures are slightly higher because the altitude is lower.
Snow in Pretoria is extremely rare. On 7 August 2012, a snowfall occurred, which had not happened for decades.
