Kimberley's climate is subtropical semi-arid, with mild, dry winters (during which it can get cold at night) and hot, sunny summers (during which thunderstorms can break out).
The city is located in the center of the South African Republic, at 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) above sea level.
On winter nights, the temperature can sometimes drop slightly below freezing. The cold record is even -8.5 °C (16.5 °F), recorded in June 2010 and August 2003.
