Bloemfontein's climate is temperate, influenced by altitude, with mild, dry winters (during which nights are cold) and warm, sunny summers (during which thunderstorms break out quite often).
The city is the capital of the Free State province and is located in central-eastern South Africa, at 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) above sea level.
At night it can get cold all year round, but especially from May to September, although during the day, under the subtropical sun, the temperature usually rises a lot. However, every now and then, as happened in July 2007, it can even snow.
