Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Yakutsk is
cold continental (according to the Köppen classification, subarctic climate - Dfc), with extremely cold winters and relatively warm summers.
Yakutsk is a city of 310,000 inhabitants, the capital of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), located in eastern Siberia, on the banks of the Lena River, and at 62 degrees north latitude.
Precipitation is scarce, amounting to about 240 millimeters (9.5 inches) per year. As often happens in cold climates, the rainiest season is summer.
However, in winter, the little humidity in the air tends to condense due to the cold, so that
light snow often falls, or tiny needles of ice, which are not statistically significant because they do not accumulate more than a millimeter per day.
The ground is normally covered in snow from approximately the second ten days of October to the end of April.
Winter is long and cold. The daily average temperature is below freezing from October to April. Fog often forms from December to February. The average in January is about -37 °C (-35 °F). Actually, Yakutsk is the coldest city of any significance in the world. In the Köppen classification, we are close to the threshold of the subarctic climate with extremely cold winter (Dfd), which starts with an average of the coldest month of -38 °C (-36.4 °F), and which is found in other areas of Yakutia.
In the past, Yakutsk was also included. In fact, over the past hundred years, the temperature has risen a lot, especially in winter. From 1891 to 1920, the daily average in January was -46.2 °C (-51.1 °F), while from 1951 to 1980, it was -42 °C (-43.6 °F).
During
cold waves, the temperature drops to -45 °C (-49 °F) or below every year, and it sometimes drops below -50 °C (-58 °F).
The record is -64.4 °C (-83.9 °F), set in February 1891. After 1930, it dropped to -61.8 °C (-79.2 °F) in February 1931. The last time it dropped below -60 °C (-76 °F) was in January 1951, with -60.3 °C (-76.5 °F). In January 1979, this value was almost reached, with -59.3 °C (-74.7 °F).
In January 1931, the monthly daily average was -51.5 °C (-60.5 °F).
Summer, from June to August, is very mild to pleasantly warm, and is also quite sunny. Although it is the rainiest season, rain and thunderstorms are usually not very frequent.
While it is true that in June it can still get cold, and in August the temperature already begins to drop,
July, with an average of 19.5 °C (67 °F), stands out as the mildest month, so much so that there are several warm days. However, it depends on the year, in fact sometimes it can get cool even in July.
Especially from mid-June to early August, there can also be
heatwaves, during which the temperature can reach, and more rarely exceed, 35 °C (95 °F). The record is 38.4 °C (101.1 °F), set in July 2011.
In July 2001, the average maximum temperature was 29.3 °C (84.7 °F).
