Novosibirsk ("New Siberia") is a city, the capital of Novosibirsk Oblast, located in in Russia, the West Siberian Lowland, along the Trans-Siberian Railway, and at 55 degrees north latitude. With 1,550,000 inhabitants, Novosibirsk is the most populous city in Siberia and the third in all of Russia.

Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 455 millimeters (18 inches) per year. In fact, due to the location east of the Urals and not far from the steppe of Central Asia, we are close to an arid area, which includes Kazakhstan, whose border is about 380 km (235 mi) to the southwest.
The rainiest season is summer.
Furthermore, due to the distance from all seas and the absence of obstacles for air masses, the climate is characterized by temperature swings.

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -17.5 °C (0.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is usually covered in snow.
During cold spells, the temperature drops below -30 °C (-22 °F) every year, and once every few years below -40 °C (-40 °F). At the Ogurtsovo station, the coldest record is -46.3 °C (-51.3 °F), set in February 1969.
In January 1969, the monthly daily average was -30.4 °C (-22.7 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is quite warm and sunny, even though rains and thunderstorms are quite frequent. The average in July is around 19.5 °C (67 °F).
Sometimes there can be heatwaves, during which the temperature can reach, and more rarely exceed, 35 °C (95 °F). The highest record is 37.3 °C (99.1 °F), set in June 2023.
