Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Irkutsk is
continental (according to the Köppen classification, humid continental climate with warm summers - Dfb), with very cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and warm summers.
Irkutsk is a city of 585,000 inhabitants, the capital of the oblast' of the same name, located in central Siberia, along the Trans-Siberian Railway, at 440 meters (1,445 feet) above sea level and at 52 degrees north latitude.
The Angara River passes through the city, and is the only outlet of
Lake Baikal, the deepest freshwater lake in the world and the second longest, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lake is located 455 meters (1,490 feet) above sea level.
The surface of the lake freezes from January to early May in the southern part, near Irkutsk, and until early June in the northern part. From mid-January to mid-April, it is possible to walk on the lake and also move around by light vehicles. During summer, the lake temperature is generally cold, but varies greatly depending on the location (it is warmer in the areas further away from the tributaries). On the lake, a strong wind, called Sarma, can blow.
The lake tempers Irkutsk's climate somewhat, which, while harsh, is a bit milder than cities further east such as Ulan-Ude and Chita.
West of Irkutsk are the
East Sayan Mountains, whose highest peak is the
Munku-Sardyk, at 3,491 meters (11,453 ft), and the Tunka National Park. South of the lake are the Khamar-Daban Mountains.
About 210 kilometers (130 miles) south of Irkutsk, across the lake, is the border with Mongolia.
Precipitation in Irkutsk is not abundant, since it amounts to about 575 millimeters (22.5 inches) per year.
The rainiest season is summer.
Furthermore, due to the distance from all seas and the absence of obstacles for air masses, the climate is characterized by
temperature swings.
Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -17 °C (1.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is usually covered in snow. During periods of stable weather, fog can form.
During
cold spells, the temperature drops below -30 °C (-22 °F) almost every year, and once every few years below -40 °C (-40 °F). The record is -49.7 °C (-57.5 °F), set in January 1915. After 1930, however, the temperature never dropped below -45 °C (-49 °F) again.
In January 1969, the monthly daily average was -26.6 °C (-15.9 °F).
Summer, from June to August, is quite warm and sunny, even though it gets cool at night, moreover, rains and thunderstorms are quite frequent. The average in July is around 19 °C (66 °F).
Sometimes there can be
hot periodos, during which the temperature can approach 35 °C (95 °F). The record is 35.7 °C (96.3 °F), set in late June 2010.
