Climate chart - Chita
The climate of Chita is continental, with frigid winters and warm summers. Since the average temperature exceeds 10 °C (50 °F) for just four months, with May just above this threshold, we are close to the subarctic climate.

Chita (also transliterated as Chita) is a city of 350,000 inhabitants, the capital of the Zabaykalsky Krai, or Transbaikal Territory (which borders China and Mongolia to the south), located in Russia, in eastern Siberia, along the Trans-Siberian Railway, at the confluence of the Chitinka and Ingoda rivers, at 650 meters (2,100 feet) above sea level and at 52 degrees north latitude.
In this area there are some lakes, including Lake Kenon, close to the city.

Precipitation is not abundant, amounting to about 340 millimeters (14 inches) per year. The only fairly rainy season is summer. evaporation.
Furthermore, due to its location within a large continent, the climate is characterized by temperature swings.

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -24.5 °C (-12 °F). Due to the altitude and the location in eastern Siberia, Chita is a particularly cold city, the only one among major southern cities to have an average minimum in January below -30 °C (-22 °F).
Due to the very dry winter, snowfalls are light and not abundant. However, since the temperature is almost always below freezing, the ground is usually covered with snow.
During cold spells, the temperature drops below -35 °C (-22 °F) almost every year, and quite often below -40 °C (-40 °F). The coldest record is -49.3 °C (-56.7 °F), set in January 1931.
In January 1936, the monthly daily average was -32.8 °C (-27 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is quite warm, even though rains and thunderstorms are quite frequent. The average in July is around 19,5 °C (67 °F). This area is partially affected by the Asian monsoon, in fact, in July and August, the sunshine amount decreases a little.
Sometimes there can be heatwaves, during which the the temperature can reach, and more rarely exceed, 35 °C (95 °F). The highest record is 40.6 °C (105.1 °F), set in July 1936. More recently, the temperature reached 38.8 °C (101.8 °F) in late June 2010.
