Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Chelyabinsk is
continental (according to the Köppen classification, humid continental climate with warm summer - Dfb), with cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and warm summers.
Chelyabinsk is a city of 1,200,000 inhabitants, the capital of the oblast' of the same name, located in western Siberia, at 230 meters (750 feet) above sea level and at 55 degrees north latitude.
In this area there are a myriad of small
lakes, some in the immediate vicinity of the city, in addition, from the Miass River, which passes through the city, the Shershnevskoye reservoir was created with a dam.
To the west, at a not great distance, are the
Ural Mountains, which separate European Russia from Siberia. The mountains are not high and are irregular, however, in this southern part they reach a maximum of 1,640 meters (5,380 ft) in Mount Yamantau, the second peak of the Urals, which is located 230 km (140 mi) southwest of Chelyabinsk. On this mountain, the tree line, above which the summit becomes subarctic, is about 1,250 meters (4,000 ft).
In fact, Chelyabinsk is known as the "Gateway to Siberia".
Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 440 millimeters (17.5 inches) per year. In fact, due to the location east of the Urals and not far from the steppe of Central Asia, we are close to an arid area, which includes Kazakhstan, whose border is about 130 km (80 mi) to the south.
The rainiest season is summer.
Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -14 °C (7 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is usually covered in snow.
During
cold spells, the temperature drops below -30 °C (-22 °F) almost every year. Occasionally it even dropped below -40 °C (-40 °F). In January 1969 it dropped to -42.2 °C (-44 °F), while between the end of December 1978 and the beginning of January 1979 it dropped to -41 °C (-41.8 °F).
In January 1969, the monthly daily average was -24.8 °C (-12.6 °F).
Summer, from June to August, is quite warm and sunny, even though rains and thunderstorms are quite frequent. The average in July is around 19 °C (66 °F).
Sometimes there can be
heatwaves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 35 °C (95 °F), and which can be interrupted by strong thunderstorms, with wind gusts. The record is 40 °C (104 °F), set in July 2023.
