Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Barnaul is
continental (according to the Köppen classification, humid continental climate with warm summer - Dfb), with very cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and warm summers.
Barnaul is a city of 630,000 inhabitants, the capital of the Altai Krai (Territory), located in southwestern Siberia, at the confluence of the Ob and Barnaulka rivers, at 200 meters (650 feet) above sea level and at 53 degrees north latitude.
Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 445 millimeters (17.5 inches) per year. In fact, due to the location east of the Urals and not far from the steppe of Central Asia, we are close to an arid area, which includes Kazakhstan, whose border is about 350 km (215 mi) to the southwest.
The rainiest season is summer.
Furthermore, due to the distance from all seas and the absence of obstacles for air masses, the climate is characterized by
temperature swings.
Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -16 °C (3 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is usually covered in snow.
During
cold spells, the temperature drops below -30 °C (-22 °F) every year, and once every few years below -40 °C (-40 °F). The record is -51.5 °C (-60.7 °F), set in January 1931.
In January 1969, the monthly daily average was -30.4 °C (-22.7 °F).
Summer, from June to August, is quite warm and sunny, even though rains and thunderstorms are quite frequent. The average in July is around 20 °C (68 °F).
Sometimes there can be
heatwaves, during which the temperature can reach, and more rarely exceed, 35 °C (95 °F). The record is 38.8 °C (101.8 °F), set in July 1992. Most recently, the temperature reached 38.5 °C (101.3 °F) in June 2023.
