Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Anadyr is
subarctic (according to the Köppen classification, subarctic climate - Dfc), with long, cold winters and mild summers.
Anadyr, formerly Novo-Mariinsk, is a city of 15,000 inhabitants, located in the far north-east of Siberia, on the coast of the Anadyr Gulf, belonging to the Bering Sea, at nearly 65 degrees north latitude.
It is the easternmost settlement in Russia with the status of town.
The Chukotka (or Chukchi) Autonomous Okrug, of which Anadyr is the capital, is the most north-eastern region of Siberia, and also includes the Bering Strait, which separates Russia from Alaska.
The time zone is 12 hours ahead the Greenwich meridian. Just east of Anadyr is the 180th meridian (or antimeridian), which is the reference line for the date change, although at these latitudes the
International Date Line passes further east, between Siberia and Alaska.
Anadyr is located near a large internal lagoon (liman) formed by the river of the same name, before flowing into the sea. In addition, around the city are wetlands, marshes and peat bogs, formed by the branches of this and other rivers. Trees, however, do not grow because the climate does not allow it.
The city is
windy all year round, but especially from November to February, and is in fact one of the windiest in all of Russia. In autumn, the south wind can prevent rivers from flowing into the sea and cause floods.
From May to August,
fog can form.
In this northern part of the Bering Sea, the
sea remains frozen solid from January to March, while it is partially frozen (also depending on the year) in December, April and May.
Precipitation is quite scarce, around 385 mm (15 in) per year. It occurs in the form of snow from October to May. In June and September, rain prevails over snow, while in July and August it hardly ever snows.
Winter is long and cold. The average daily temperature is around or below freezing from October to May. The average for January is around -22 °C (-7.5 °F). Light snow often falls. Sometimes, however, heavy snowfall can occur.
During
cold spells, the temperature drops to -35 °C (-31 °F) or below every year.
The record low is -44.7 °C (-48.5 °F), set in February 1940.
Summer, from June to August, is mild, with rain, wind and fog quite frequent. The rains increase gradually. July stands out as the mildest month, with an average of around 12.5 °C (54.5 °F).
Especially from mid-June to early August, there can also be
relatively warm periods, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 20 °C (68 °F), and more rarely 25 °C (77 °F). The record is 30 °C (86 °F), set in July 1956. More recently the temperature reached 29 °C (84.2 °F) in July 2014.
