The climate of Vranje is moderately continental, with cold winters and warm summers.
The city is located in southern Serbia, between Kosovo, northern Macedonia and Bulgaria, in a valley at an altitude of 500 meters (1,650 ft). Snow covers the ground for 40 days a year.
Winter is cold and gray, with snowfalls and frosts, although there are also some quite mild periods. Sometimes fog can form.
During cold spells, which occur every year or so, the temperature drops to -15 °C (5 °F) or below. The coldest record is -25 °C (-13 °F), recorded in January 1985.
Summer is hot and sunny, although thunderstorms can sometimes break out in the afternoon. The temperature range is high, so it can be cool, or even a little cold, at night, while during the day it can be very hot. The highest record is 41.5 °C (106.5 °F), recorded in July 2007.
