Climate chart - Craiova
The climate of Craiova is continental, with cold winters and hot summers.
The city is located in the south-west of Romania, in Wallachia, the southern plain area.
Winter is cold and gray (though less so than in other areas of Romania), with snowfalls and frosts. Sometimes fog can form.
During cold spells, which occur every year or so, the temperature drops to -15 °C (5 °F) or below. The coldest record is -29.5 °C (-21 °F), recorded in January 1963. From 2001 to 2020, the extreme minimum was -22.5 °C (-8.5 °F), recorded in February 2012 and in December 1997.
Summer is hot and sunny, although thunderstorms can sometimes break out in the afternoon.
In the hottest periods, the temperature can reach or exceed 37 °C (98.5 °F). The record heat is 42.5 °C (108 °F), recorded in July 2007. We are in southern Romania, the area most exposed to heat waves.
