The climate of Cluj-Napoca is moderately continental, characterized by cold winters, with temperatures often below freezing (0 °C or 32 °F), and quite warm summers.
The city is located in northwestern Romania, in Transylvania, 350 meters (1,150 feet) above sea level.
Winter is particularly cold, not only because of the altitude, but also because Transylvania is surrounded by mountains, so cold air tends to stagnate. Fog can form quite frequently. Furthermore, during cold waves, the temperature can drop below -20 °C (-4 °F). The coldest record is -34 °C (-29 °F), recorded in January 1963. From 2001 to 2020, the extreme minimum was -22 °C (-7.5 °F), recorded in December 2002.
In summer, it is often hot during the day, but nights are cool, and sometimes very cool, in fact the temperature can drop to 7/8 °C (45/46 °F) even in July and August. The sun often shines, but there may be rains or thunderstorms.
On the hottest days of the year, the temperature typically reaches 32/33 °C (90/91 °F). The heat record is 38.5 °C (101.5 °F), recorded in August 2012.
