The climate of Caransebes is continental, with cold winters and warm summers.
The city is located in the west of Romania, in the Banat region, 200 meters (650 feet) above sea level. The proximity of the southern Carpathians, which are located a few kilometers to the east, makes the climate a little more rainy than in other cities of Romania.
Winter is cold and gray (though less so than in other areas of Romania), with snowfalls and frosts alternating with milder periods.
During cold spells, which occur every year or so, the temperature drops to -15 °C (5 °F) or below. The coldest record is -27 °C (-17 °F), recorded in January 1963. From 2001 to 2020, the extreme minimum was -22 °C (-7.5 °F), recorded in January 2000.
Summer is hot and sunny, though with fairly frequent thunderstorms (especially in June).
In the hottest periods, the temperature can reach or exceed 35 °C (95 °F). The record heat is 40.5 °C (105 °F), recorded in July 2007. In 2015, the temperature reached 38.5 °C (101.5 °F) in mid-September.
