Basco (formerly Santo Domingo de Basco), is a town of 10,000 inhabitants, located in the far north of the Philippines, on the small island of Batan, belonging to the province of Batanes, and at 20 degrees north latitude.
About 200 km (125 mi) to the north is the island of Taiwan.
In this northernmost part of the Philippines, winter is not very warm, and there can sometimes be quite cool periods, with lows of 13/14 °C (55/57 °F) and highs of 18/20 °C (64/68 °F).
In winter, the sea remains warm enough to swim in even in this northern part of the Philippines, although the air can be a little cool.

Along with the central-northern Philippines, Basco can be hit by typhoons, the tropical cyclones of Southeast Asia. Typhoons generally occur from May to December, although they are more frequent between August and November.
