The city is the capital of the province of Alto Amazonas and is located in northern Peru, at almost 6 degrees south latitude, in the Loreto region, at the confluence of the Paranapura and Huallaga rivers. The altitude is 140 meters (460 feet), but to the southwest are the first spurs of the Andes.
