The climate of Tacna is subtropical desert, with a warm, fairly sunny period from December to March and a quite cool period from June to September, during which fogs and low clouds can form. The rains are very rare.
The city is located in the extreme south of Peru, at 18 degrees south latitude, a short distance from the border with Chile, and about 40 km (25 mi) away from the Pacific Ocean. As the city extends into the valley of the Caplina river, the altitude varies a lot, from 400 to 800 meters (1,300 to 2,600 feet), while the central part is at 580 meters (1,900 ft). The airport, from which the weather data is taken, is at 470 meters (1,540 ft).
