In Arequipa, there is a subtropical desert mountain climate, with a bit rain from January to March, and very rare or completely absent rains in the rest of the year. Daytime temperatures are mild and stable throughout the year, while nighttime temperatures decrease from May to September, the austral winter, when they become cold enough.
The city is located in southern Peru, at 16 degrees south latitude, at 2,300 meters (7,545 feert) above sea level, on the western side of the Andes and about 85 km (52 mi) from the Pacific Ocean. A little to the north are some volcanoes, including Chachani, 6,057 meters (19,872 feet) high, Pichu Pichu and Misti.
