Climate chart - Asuncion
The climate of Asunción is subtropical, with very mild winters (from May to August), and very hot, muggy and rainy summers (from November to March).
The city is the capital of Paraguay and is located in the south of the country, on the border with Argentina, at 25 degrees south latitude. The Pilcomayo River marks the border with Argentina north of the city, and joins the Paraguay River near Asunción. Across the border is the Argentine town of Clorinda.
The rains are abundant in the hot period: precipitation exceeds 100 millimeters (4 inches) per month from October to May. Winter is the driest season: in July and August, it rains on average for 4/5 days a month. In summer, the rains often occur in the form of thunderstorms, sometimes intense and accompanied by hail and gusts of wind. When the rains are particularly abundant, the river can overflow, flooding parts of the city.
In winter, clashes between air masses can lead to sudden changes in temperature. There are hot periods, with highs around 30 °C (86 °F) or higher, however, there can also be quite cold periods, usually of short duration, in which the temperature can drop to about 0 °C (32 °F) at night, while during the day it can remain around 11/12 °C (52/54 °F).
Instead, from mid-August to April there can be heat waves, in which the temperature reaches 40 °C (104 °F). Between late September and early October 2020, the temperature reached or exceeded 40 °C (104 °F) for six out of eight days, and reached a maximum of 42.8 °C (109 °F).
