Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Quetta (formerly Shalkot) is
arid continental, with quite cold, rainy winters and very hot, dry summers.
The city is the capital of
Balochistan and is located in western Pakistan, at 1,650 meters (5,400 feet) above sea level and 30 degrees north latitude. Quetta is the only major city in Pakistan that is located in the mountains.
We are in a desert area, but in winter and spring, the presence of high mountains means that the humidity coming from the depressions of Mediterranean origin can condense into rain (or snow in winter). To the east of the city is Mount Loe Nekan, 3,575 meters (11,729 feet) high.
In
winter, from the end of November to the beginning of March, the temperature difference between night and day is often noticeable. During cold spells, the temperature can drop as low as -10 °C (14 °F) or even below. At the end of December 2013, it dropped to -13.5 °C (7.7 °F), while previously, in January 1970, it had dropped to -18.3 °C (-0.95 °F).
In
summer, despite the altitude, during the day it is very hot, from mid-May to mid-September the heat records are equal to or higher than 40 °C (104 °F). In July 1998 the temperature reached 42 °C (107.6 °F).
In July and August, some rain can occur, but very rarely because we are in an area where the
Indian monsoon practically does not arrive. However, occasionally there can be heavy rains concentrated in two or three days. In 2022, a year of La Niña, there was a flood at the end of August.
Best Time
To visit Quetta you can choose spring and autumn, and in particular the months of April and October, bearing in mind that at night it can get cold.
