The climate of Multan is
subtropical desert, with a very mild winter, an extremely hot period in May and June, and a period, from July to September, partially affected by the Indian monsoon.
The city is located in central Pakistan, in the
Punjab province, on the banks of the Ravi River (a tributary of the Indus) and at 30 degrees north latitude.
In
winter, from December to February, nights are cool, and can sometimes be cold when cold air comes from the north. In January 2008, the temperature dropped to -1.6 °C (29 °F).
In addition,
fog can sometimes form in winter, at night and in the early morning. Generally, the fog dissolves during the day, however, in these situations, especially from mid-December to mid-January, it can sometimes be cold even during the day, and there may be periods in which the maximum remain around 10/12 °C (50/54 °F).
In winter and spring there are rare
rains, brought by the depressions of Mediterranean origin.
In spring, temperatures rise rapidly. The hottest months are May and June, when there can be
intense heat waves. The temperature reached 50 °C (122 °F) in late May 2010 and 49.8 (121.6 °F) in early June 1994.
From July to September, the Indian
monsoon period, the wind from the south slightly lowers the temperature, which however remains very high, since the sea is far away. The rains are rare, but at times they can be intense, resulting in floods.
Best Time
The
best time to visit Multan is from early November to early March, being the coolest within the dry season. It must be said that this is the time of the year when pollution is highest. Also, in the middle of winter, usually from mid-December to late January, it can get a little cold and fog can be persistent, so the latter period can be avoided.
