The climate of Lahore is
subtropical, with quite dry, very mild winters (but during which it is often cold at night), and very hot summers, which are also rainy because of the Indian monsoon. The monsoon runs roughly from July to mid-September.
The city is the capital of
Punjab and is located in north-eastern Pakistan, on the banks of the Ravi River (a tributary of the Indus), at an altitude of 220 meters (720 feet) and 31 degrees north latitude. Beyond the border with India, about 30 km (18 mi) to the east is the city of Amritsar.
We are in the northern part of the Indo-Gangetic plain, which is a
very polluted area, especially from October to February, when air stagnates more easily.
Unlike in southern Pakistan, in this northern part of the plain, some
rain may occur in winter and spring, brought by disturbances of remote Mediterranean origin.
In
winter, from December to February (but sometimes also in November and March), nights are often cold. On the coldest nights of the year, the temperature can drop to around the freezing point. In January 2006 it dropped to -2 °C (28.5 °F), and in December 2007 to -1 °C (30 °F).
Also, from November to February,
fog can form at night and in the early morning. Generally, the fog dissolves during the day, however, in these situations, especially from mid-December to mid-January, it can sometimes be cold even during the day, and there may be periods in which the maximum remain around 8/10 °C (46/50 °F).
On the other hand, from April to early July, before the monsoon,
it is very hot. In addition, sandstorms can sometimes occur. In the hottest periods the temperature can reach or exceed 45 °C (113 °F). The heat records are around 48 °C (118.5 °F).
From July to September, the Indian
monsoon period, the temperature decreases, while the humidity increases. During this period, the city is subject to floods, especially in some areas and when the rains are more abundant than normal.
Best Time
The
best time to visit Lahore is from late October to mid-March, being the coolest within the dry season. It must be said that this is the time of the year when pollution is highest. Also, in the middle of winter, usually from mid-December to late January, it can get a little cold and fog can be persistent, so the latter period can be avoided.
