Climate chart - Sur
The climate of Sur is tropical desert, with warm winters and long, very hot summers.
Sur is a city of 70,000 inhabitants, the capital of the governorate of Ash Sharqiyah South, located in north-eastern Oman, on the coast, near the junction of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, and at 22 degrees north latitude.
To the west there is a chain parallel to the coast, the Hajar Mountains, which in this area reach approximately 2,100 meters (6,900 feet).

Precipitation is decidedly scarce, since it amounts to 80 millimeters (3.1 inches) per year. Most of it occurs from December to March, while in summer, although this area is partly affected by the monsoon circulation, it is very rare.

Winter, from December to February, is warm and sunny, with rare rainfall. The average temperature in January is around 22 °C (71.5 °F). The sun often shines even in this season. However, there can be periods of bad weather, with wind, rain and thunderstorms, although this only happens for a few days a month.
Sur is too far south to receive the very cool air that can sometimes affect the Persian Gulf, in fact, in recent decades the temperature has never dropped below 12 °C (53.5 °F). However, there can sometimes be days that are a little cool, with highs around 20/22 °C (68/72 °F), more likely in January and the first half of February.

The long summer, from April to October, is very hot. The daily average in June and July is of 33 °C (91.5 °F). Temperatures remain high even at night. The wind blows from the interior more often than in other areas of the northern coast of Oman, however, the combination of heat and humidity is difficult to bear.
In this season, some cloudiness can form, brought by the monsoon circulation that affects the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula in summer, and which, in other more exposed areas, also brings rain.

The hottest days are those when the winds blow from the interior of the Arabian Peninsula. In these cases, the temperature can exceed 35 °C (95 °F) in winter and 40 °C (104 °F) from March to October, but at least the humidity decreases. The heat records from late May to early July are of 49/49.5 °C (120/121 °F).

Sur can occasionally be affected by tropical cyclones from the Arabian Sea, which bring strong winds and torrential rains. Cyclones form from May to December, and are more frequent at the beginning of the period (May-June), and a little less at the end (October-December). For example, the city was hit by cyclones Gonu in early June 2007, and Phet in early June 2010.
