Climate chart - Muscat
The climate of Muscat is tropical desert, with pleasantly warm winters and long, very hot summers.
Muscat is a city of 795,000 inhabitants, the capital of Oman, located in the north of the country, on the coast of the Gulf of Oman (called Al Batinah), at 23 degrees north latitude (just north of the Tropic of Cancer).
In the metropolitan area, which has 1,700,000 inhabitants, there are cities such as Seeb and Bawshar.
To the south is a chain parallel to the coast, the Hajar mountains.

Image of Muscat

Precipitation is very low, since it amounts to 90 millimeters (3.5 inches) per year. It occurs in two periods: from December to April, when low pressure areas form over the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, and from June to August, when rare rains can occur, brought by the monsoon circulation that affects the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula in summer (and sometimes also by cyclones, see below).

Winter, from December to February, is pleasantly warm and sunny, with rare rainfall. The average temperature in January is around 21 °C (70 °F). The sun often shines even in this season. However, there can be periods of bad weather, with wind, rain and thunderstorms, although this only happens for a few days a month.
Muscat is too far south to receive the very cool air that can sometimes affect the Persian Gulf, in fact, in recent decades the temperature has never dropped below 10 °C (50 °F). However, there can sometimes be days that are a little cool, with highs around or below 20 °C (68 °F), more likely in January.

The long summer, from April to October, is very hot. In particular, May and June are the hottest months, with a daily average of 34/35 °C (93/95 °F). In July and August the temperature drops a little, but on the other hand the humidity increases, and sometimes, as mentioned, a bit of cloudiness can form and, although rarely, some rain can fall.
The hottest days are those in which the winds blow from the interior of the Arabian Peninsula. In these cases, the temperature can exceed 30 °C (86 °F) in winter and 40 °C (104 °F) from March to October, but at least the humidity decreases. In summer, the temperature can sometimes remain around or above 35 °C (95 °F) even at night. In May and June the heat records are of 48.5 °C (119.5 °F).

As mentioned, every now and then Muscat can be affected by tropical cyclones coming from the Arabian Sea, which bring strong winds and torrential rains. Cyclones form from May to December, and are more frequent at the beginning of the period (May-June), and somewhat less so at the end (October-December). For example, the city was hit by cyclones Gonu in early June 2007, Phet in early June 2010, and Shaheen in early October 2021.
