Climate chart - Alesund
The climate of Ålesund is oceanic, with cold, rainy winters and cool summers.
The town is located on the west coast of Norway, in an area heavily influenced by ocean currents, so it is very mild in winter, at least considering the latitude, while it is cool in summer.
In winter it can also snow, although the temperature is usually above freezing and therefore the snow does not accumulate on the ground, and if it does, it melts after a while.
However, there may sometimes be colder periods, in which the temperature drops below freezing. On the coldest nights of the year, the temperature typically drops to -5/-6 °C (21/23 °F), but can sometimes drop lower. The coldest record is -11.5 °C (11.3 °F) and was set in January 1982.
In summer, daytime temperatures generally stay below 20 °C (68 °F), but sometimes there can be warm periods, in which they reach 25 °C (77 °F). The highest record is 31.5 °C (88.7 °F) and was set in July 2018.
The latitude of Ålesund is 62°28'N. On the shortest day of the year, December 21st, the sun rises at 10:05 am and sets at 3:02 pm. On the longest day, June 21, the sun rises at 3:37 am and sets at 11:37 pm. The white nights, in which it is not completely dark even at midnight, occur from May 3 to August 11.
