Climate chart - Auckland
Auckland has an oceanic climate, with mild, rainy winters (from June to August) and warm summers (the average temperature in January and February is around 20 °C or 68 °F). Being in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed compared to the northern hemisphere.
Auckland is the largest city of New Zealand and is located in the northern part of the North Island (the mildest area of the country), at 37 degrees south latitude. The city is surrounded by water, as the metropolitan area extends from the Hauraki Gulf in the east (where there are also a few small islands) to the Manukau Port, a bay, in the southwest.
To the southeast we find hills, the Hunua Ranges, which reach 688 meters (2,257 ft) and are protected in a national park.
The daytime temperatures are around 14/15 °C (57/59 °F) in winter and 23/24 °C (73/75 °F) in summer.
Rainfall is fairly abundant, since it amounts to 1,200 millimeters (47 inches) per year, and it's well distributed over the months. However, the rainiest season is winter.
The sun can be seen, between one depression and another, all year round, but especially in summer, for a total of 2,000 hours per year.
Near Auckland, the temperature of the sea is very cool, however, it reaches 20/21 °C (68/70 °F) from January to March, when those who do not suffer from the cold can try to swim.

Auckland

In winter, sometimes there can be quite cold periods, with lows just above freezing and highs of 10/12 °C (50/54 °F). At night, the temperature almost never drops below freezing. In July 1982, it dropped to -0.8 °C (30.5 °F).
Snow in Auckland is extremely rare. In August 2011, there was a snowfall without accumulation and with a minimum temperature of 2 °C (35.5 °F).
In autumn and winter, fog can form at night and in the early morning.

In summer, on the warmest days, the temperature generally reaches 27/28 °C (81/82 °F), and until now it has never exceeded 30 °C (86 °F).
From time to time, the North Island can be affected by tropical cyclones, which can leave the tropical zone and head south. In the last few decades, tropical cyclones or their remains have affected New Zealand from mid-December to April 20, with a higher frequency from January to March. In recent years, Auckland has been hit by the remnants of Cyclone Ita in mid-April 2014, by Cyclone Dovi in mid-February 2022, and by Cyclone Gabrielle in mid-February 2023.

Best Time

The best time to visit Auckland is the summer, from December to February, as it is the warmest and sunniest of the year. However, even in summer there may be periods that are rainy or windy, or during which it gets cool at night.
In addition, it should be remembered that tropical cyclones or their remnants can come from time to time.
