Climate chart - Matamoros
The climate of Heroica Matamoros is sub-tropical, with a pleasantly warm winter and a very hot, muggy summer.
The city is located in northeastern Mexico, in the state of Tamaulipas, near the border with Texas. Across the Rio Grande River is the American city of Brownsville. The coast, where Playa Bagdad is located, is 30 km (18 mi) away.
Even though the winter is mild, occasionally there may be short cold waves lasting 2 or 3 days, in which the minimum temperature drops around freezing, and the maximum remains around 5/7 °C (41/45 °F) or even below. Sometimes it can even snow. In February 2021, the temperature dropped to -5 °C (23 °F).
However, in other circumstances, it can get hot even in the dead of winter.
In summer, in contrast, intense heat prevails.
From June to November (but with a higher probability from August to October), there is the risk of hurricanes. The city was hard hit by Hurricane Dolly in late July 2008.
From January to March, the sea is a bit cool, but after all acceptable for swimming, while from June to October it is pleasantly warm. Here are the average sea temperatures.
