Taldykorgan (or Taldyqorǵan, formerly Taldy-Kurgan), is a city of 205,000 inhabitants, the capital of the region (oblys) of Zhetisu (or Jetisu), located in the south-east of Kazakhstan, at 600 meters (2,000 feet) above sea level and at 45 degrees north latitude.
To the east are the
Dzungarian Alatau mountains, whose highest peak, Mount Alagordy (or Besbakan) is 4,622 meters (15,164 ft) high.
To the west is instead the Saryesik Atyrau desert.
