Climate chart - Shymkent
The climate of Shymkent is continental, with cold winters and very hot summers.

Shymkent (also transliterated as Chimkent or Şymkent) is a city located in southern Kazakhstan, at 500 meters above sea level and 42 degrees north latitude. With 1,250,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest city in the country. Shymkent has the status of a city, but is surrounded by the Turkistan oblys (region).
The city is located on the ancient Silk Road. About 60 km (37 mi) to the southeast is the border with Uzbekistan, and 100 km (62 mi) to the south is its capital, Tashkent.
Near the border are mountains, belonging to the western part of the Tian Shan, and which are protected in the Sayram-Ugam National Park.
Precipitation is not abundant, amounting to 615 millimeters (24 inches) per year, most of which fall from November to April. Summer is the driest season.

Winter, from December to February, is cold, with an average January temperature of around 0 °C (32 °F).
Cold weather, however, is not constant. In fact, unlike in northern Kazakhstan, winds from the south can bring mild periods, during which the temperature can reach, and sometimes exceed, 15 °C (59 °F).
In the Köppen classification, for this type of climate, the average of 0 °C (32 °F) in the coldest month represents the threshold between the continental climate with hot and dry summer (Dsa) and the Mediterranean climate with hot summer (Csa).
If you look closely, Shymkent is one of the mildest cities in Kazakhstan. In fact, in Kazakhstan, there are only two areas, this and the southwest, on the coast of the Caspian Sea, where the January average is around freezing.
Due to the location west of the mountains, winters are rainier (and snowier) than in other cities in Kazakhstan (even compared to Almaty, which receives the same amount of precipitation but more in other seasons). This means that there can sometimes be heavy snowfall.
Fog can form during periods of stable weather.
During cold spells, the temperature can drop to -15 °C (5 °F) or below. Occasionally it can even drop below -20 °C (-4 °F). The coldest record is -31.1 °C (-24 °F), set in January 1969.

Summer, from June to August, is very hot and sunny, although the altitude tempers the heat a bit compared to the lowland cities in the area such as Turkistan. The average in July is 27 °C (80.5 °F). Humidity, however, is low.
On the hottest days, the temperature usually reaches 39/40 °C (102/104 °F).
The hottest record is 44 °C (111 °F), set in August 1944. In July 2023, the average maximum was 37.3 °C (99.1 °F).
