The climate of Petropavl is
continental (according to the Köppen classification, humid continental climate with warm summers - Dfb), with very cold winters and relatively warm summers.
Petropavl, formerly Petropavlovsk, is a city of 300,000 inhabitants located in the far north of Kazakhstan, on the banks of the Ishim River, in the region (oblys) of North Kazakhstan, of which it is the capital, and at almost 55 degrees north latitude.
About 50 km (30 mi) to the north is the border with Asian Russia (Siberia).
In winter we are in one of the coldest areas of Kazakhstan (not the coldest though, because the far east is even colder), while in summer we are in the coolest area (excluding the mountains).
Precipitation is not abundant, amounting to about 390 millimeters (15.5 inches) per year, however, it is more abundant than in central-southern Kazakhstan (excluding the mountainous areas).
The rainiest season is summer, due to afternoon thunderstorms.
Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is around -16 °C (3 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is normally covered in snow.

Summer, from June to August, is quite warm and sunny, although rain and thunderstorms are quite frequent. The average in July is around 19.5 °C (67 °F).
Sometimes there can be
heatwaves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 35 °C (95 °F). The record is 40.5 °C (105 °F), set in July 1940. More recently, the temperature reached 40 °C (104 °F) in July 2023. In the latter month, the average maximum temperature was 30.1 °C (86.2 °F).
