The climate of Atyrau is arid continental, with cold winters, during which the temperature is usually below freezing, and very hot summers.

Atyrau (formerly Guryev) is a city of 405,000 inhabitants, the capital of the region of the same name, located in western Kazakhstan, at 47 degrees north latitude and 20 meters (65 feet) below sea level (in the Caspian Depression).
The Ural River, considered as the border between Europe and Asia, passes through the city, and 30 km (18 mi) further south enters the Caspian Sea.
About 290 km (180 mi) southwest is the city of Astrahan, Russia.

Precipitation is decidedly scarce, since it is lower than 200 millimeters (8 inches) per year.
