The climate of Mafraq is temperate arid, with mild winters and hot, sunny summers.
Mafraq is a city of 120,000 inhabitants, located in the northwest of Jordan, on the Transjordan plateau, at 700 meters (2,300 fet) above sea level and 32 degrees north latitude. About 15 km (9 mi) to the northeast is the border with Syria.

Precipitation is decidedly scarce, since it amounts to 135 millimeters (5.3 inches) per year. It occurs from October to May, while from June to September, it practically never rains.

The winter, from December to February, is mild, with an average January temperature of around 8 °C (46.5 °F). There are several sunny periods, however, this is the only relatively rainy season, in which periods of bad weather can occur, with wind, rain and thunderstorms.
During the cold air outbreaks that hit the Middle East, even snowfall can occur.
During these cold spells, temperatures drop a few degrees below freezing, and occasionally as low as -6/-7 °C (19/21 °F).

Summer, from June to September, is hot and sunny. The average temperature in July and August is around 26 °C (79 °F). Temperatures are not as high as in the south and east of Jordan, however, the sun at these latitudes (and altitudes) is very strong.
In addition, there can sometimes be heat waves, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 40 °C (104 °F). The heat record is 45 °C (113 °F), set in August 2023.
