Climate chart - Vibo Valentia
Climate chart - Vibo Valentia

The climate of Vibo Valentia can be defined as Mediterranean, even though it is slightly cooled by the altitude. Winters are quite mild but rainy, while summers are warm and sunny.
The city, formerly called Monteleone, is located in southern Italy, in the Calabria region, at an altitude of 480 meters (1,575 ft), near the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the part called Costa degli Dei ("Coast of the Gods"), which borders the so-called "horn of Calabria". On the coast, near the city, we find Vibo Marina and Pizzo Calabro, while further west we find Tropea and Capo Vaticano.
To the southeast we find the Serre Calabresi, the central part of the Calabrian Apennines.
Winter, from December to February, is quite mild, and is characterized by sunny periods alternating with rainy periods.
Temperatures are a little lower than at sea level, and during cold air irruptions, the cold is felt more. However, the temperature rarely drops below freezing. In January 2017 it dropped to -3 °C (26.5 °F).
Despite the altitude, snow in Vibo Valentia is rare, given that it is located on the Tyrrhenian side and near the sea, although it must be said that in the past, snow was more frequent. The last real snowfall, around 20 cm (8 in), dates back to February 2015. On the coast, snow is even more rare, however, in January 1999 it also snowed in Vibo Marina.

Summer, from June to August, is warm and sunny, with the sea breeze blowing regularly in the afternoon and with rare rains.
Temperatures are more pleasant than on the coast, however, even here it can get very hot when the sirocco blows from Africa. In June 2007, when the temperature reached 43 °C (109 °F) in Crotone, it reached 40 °C (104 °F) in Vibo Valentia.

Best Time

You can visit Vibo Valentia in the summer, from June to August, as it is the warmest and driest period of the year. It must be said that sometimes it can get very hot, though more rarely than in the plains.
The best months for a beach holiday on the coast are July and August. In June, the days are long and the weather is often good, but the sea is still a bit cool. You can still go in September, in fact the sea is still quite warm, but the days get shorter and the first waves of bad weather can occur, especially in the second half of the month.
