Climate chart - Santa Maria Leuca
The climate of Santa Maria Di Leuca is Mediterranean, with mild, relatively rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
The town, part of the municipality of Castrignano del Capo, is located in south-eastern Italy, in the province of Lecce, in the southern tip of Salento, the "heel of Italy", which separates the Ionian Sea from the Adriatic Sea. It is a windy area.
Winter, from December to February, is mild, and is characterized by sunny periods alternating with rainy periods.
Despite the mild climate, due to the proximity to the Balkan peninsula, there can be cold periods, usually of short duration, in which the temperature approaches freezing. In these cases, it can even snow, although it snows less often than in the center and north of Apulia. A light snowfall can be seen almost every year, but to see the ground whitened by snow, you have to wait a few years.
In January 2017, there was a period of cold and snow that lasted six days, and one day with a maximum temperature of -1 °C (30 °F).
During cold spells, the temperature generally drops to -1/-2 °C (28/30 °F), but occasionally it can drop to lower values. The coldest record is -5 °C (23 °F) and was set in January 1968.
