Climate chart - Salerno
The climate of Salerno is Mediterranean, with mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in southern Italy, in the Campania region, on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. To the west we find the Amalfi coast (see Positano, Amalfi), and north of the coast, the town of Cava de' Tirreni. To the south-east we find the Sele Plain, with the municipalities of Battipaglia, Eboli and Pontecagnano, while further south we find the remains of the ancient city of Paestum.
Immediately north of Salerno there are hills, belonging to the Picentini Mountains, including Monte Stella, 953 meters (3,127 feet) high. To the north-west we find the Lattari Mountains. The Irno river flows in a valley between the mountains and joins the sea in Salerno.
Due to its position on the coast, facing south and with the hills to the north, Salerno, as well as the Amalfi coast, has a mild but also rainy microclimate, especially in autumn. In late October 1954 and early November 1966, the city was hit by floods.
The mildest part of the city is the western one. The meteorological data are collected at the port, so the temperatures are particularly mild.

Winter, from December to February, is mild, with sunny periods but also periods of bad weather. Sometimes the rains can be abundant, and this can also happen in autumn, in October and in November.
It rarely gets very cold, although there can sometimes be cold, windy days, with the north wind, the tramontana, that is channeled in the Irno valley.
Snow in Salerno is very rare, given the location near the sea and protected by the mountains to the north. Occasionally, a light and short snowfall can be observed, but to see an accumulation of a few centimeters (1 cm = 0.4 in) you have to wait a few years. However, in recent years, this happened at the end of December 2014, in January 2017, at the end of February 2018 and in January 2019.

Salerno

The summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with the sea breeze blowing regularly in the afternoon and with rare thunderstorms that can arrive from the Apennines.
During heat waves of African origin, the temperature can reach 38-40 °C (100-104 °F).

Best Time

The best times to visit Salerno are spring and autumn, ie from mid-April to mid-June and from September to early October. In June, the weather is often nice, but it can sometimes get hot, especially in the second half of the month.
The best months for a beach holiday are July and August. In June, the days are long and the weather is often good, but the sea is still a bit cool. You can still go in September, in fact the sea is still quite warm, but the days get shorter and the first waves of bad weather can occur, especially in the second half of the month.
