Climate chart - Olbia
In Olbia, the climate is Mediterranean, with mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
As in the rest of Sardinia, both the mistral (cool, dry wind from the north-west) and the sirocco (warm, humid wind from the south-east) can blow.
The city is located on the coast of the homonymous gulf, in the north-eastern part of Sardinia, called Gallura. To the north are the peninsula of Golfo Aranci, Porto Rotondo and the Costa Smeralda ("Emerald Coast"), whose main center is Porto Cervo, a fraction of the municipality of Arzachena.
Winter, from December to February, is mild, and is characterized by sunny periods alternating with rainy periods.
It rarely gets very cold, however, sometimes there can be cold, windy and rainy days, with highs around 5/6 °C (41/43 °F).
Snow in Olbia is rare, however, in this part of Sardinia, which is exposed to currents from the north-east, snowfalls can sometimes occur, although generally light. Snowfalls with an accumulation of a few centimeters (1 in = 2.5 cm) occurred in January 1985, February 1986, January 1999, February 2012 and late February 2018.
In general, the temperature drops to -2/-3 °C (27/28 °F) in the coldest periods. The coldest record is -4 °C (25 °F) and was set in December 2001.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with rare rains. The sea breeze tempers the heat in the afternoon, but brings humid air.
There can be hot and sultry periods, especially from late July to late August, when the sea is warmer.
Furthermore, heatwaves of African origin can sometimes occur: in these cases, it is possible for the temperature to reach or exceed 40 °C (104 °F).
In the exceptional month of July 2023, the temperature reached 47.4 °C (117.3 °F), while in August 2003 the average maximum was 36.5 °C (97.7 °F).

Best Time

To visit Olbia, you can choose the periods from mid-April to mid-May and from mid-September to mid-October, since in summer it can get very hot. It must be said that in both periods there may be rainy days.
The best months for a beach holiday are July and August. In June, the days are longer and the weather is often good, but the sea is still a bit cool. You can still go in September, in fact the sea is still quite warm, but the days get shorter and the first waves of bad weather can occur, especially in the second half of the month.
