Climate chart - Lucca
The climate of Lucca is Mediterranean, with mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in the northwest of Tuscany, less than 20 km (12 miles) from the sea (where Viareggio is located), and a short distance from the Apennines, which makes the rains more abundant.

Winter, from December to February, is mild, and is characterized by sunny periods alternating with rainy ones. Due to the proximity of the mountains, when it rains, it rains a lot, although less than in autumn.
Snow in Lucca is quite rare, but it is certainly more frequent than in Pisa and Livorno. For example, snowfalls with an accumulation of 20 cm (8 in) or more occurred in late November 1973, in February 1983, January 1985, mid-March 1987, February 1991, December 2010, and on March 1, 2018.
On the coldest nights of the year, the temperature typically drops slightly below freezing, however, during the most intense cold spells, it can drop lower.
In the city, the cold record of -13.5 °C (7.5 °F) was set in January 1985, but in the surrounding countryside, the temperature dropped to -15 °C (5 °F). Apart from this exceptional event, the temperature reached -9 °C (16 °F) in February 1956, -8 °C (17.5 °F) in January 1963, -9 °C (16 °F) in January 1968, -7.5 °C (18.5 °F) in March 2005, and -8 °C (17.5 °F) in December 2009.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with a few afternoon thunderstorms that can come from the Apennines. During the day, it is hot, though less than in Florence, moreover, the sea breeze blows in the afternoon.
Sometimes, however, there can be particularly hot and muggy periods. On the hottest days of the year, the temperature typically reaches around 35 °C (95 °F).
The highest record, 41.5 °C (106.5 °F), was recorded in August 2017. Previously, the temperature had reached 39.5 °C (103 °F) in July 1983, 38 °C (100.5 °F) in late June 2002, and 40 °C (104 °F) in August 2003 and August 2011.
