Climate chart - Leonessa
The climate of Leonessa is moderately continental, with cold winters and warm summers.
The town is located in the extreme north of the Lazio region, in the province of Rieti, at an altitude of 965 meters (3,165 feet), north of Mount Terminillo, and close to the ski slopes of Campo Stella. The Leonessa plateau continues north, in Umbria, where the town of Monteleone di Spoleto is located.
About 25 km (15.5 mi) to the north-east we find Amatrice, which has a similar climate although less rainy, in fact, about 900 mm (35 inches) of rain or snow falls per year instead of 1,400 mm (55 in).
Here are the average temperatures of Mount Terminillo. The weather station is located at 1,875 meters (6,152 feet), although the summit is at 2,217 meters (7,274 ft).

In winter, abundant snowfalls can occur in Leonessa. On the coldest nights of the year, the temperature typically drops to around -10 °C (14 °F). During cold spells, the temperature can drop to -15 °C (5 °F), and sometimes even lower. In January 1985 it dropped to -20 °C (-4 °F).

The summer, from June to August, is often sunny in the morning, but with possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. During the day the temperatures are quite high, while nights are cool. During hot periods, the temperature can exceed 30 °C (86 °F). The heat records are around 35 °C (95 °F).

You can go to Leonessa both in winter, perhaps for skiing, and in summer, perhaps for trekking in the mountains and to escape the heat of the plains.
However, in winter there is not always snow on the slopes.
