Climate chart - Lecce
The climate of Lecce is Mediterranean, with mild, relatively rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in south-eastern Italy, in the Salento Peninsula (the southern part of the Apulia region), 9 km (6 mi) away from the coast of the Adriatic Sea (see San Cataldo), but also 25 km (15 mi) away from the Ionian Sea (see Porto Cesareo).
Being a flat peninsula and surrounded by the sea, it is also quite windy.
In periods of good weather, from October to March, fog can form.
Winter, from December to February, is mild, and is characterized by sunny periods alternating with rainy periods.
Despite the mild climate, due to the proximity to the Balkan peninsula, there can be cold periods, usually of short duration, in which the temperature approaches freezing. In these cases, it can even snow, although it does snow less often than on the hills of Apulia. Some snowflakes can be seen almost every year, but an accumulation of a few centimeters on the ground occurs once every 4/5 years.
In March 1987, it snowed for eight days and the snow reached 30 centimeters (12 inches) in depth. In January 2017, on the other hand, the snow remained on the ground for six days in a row.
During cold spells, the temperature drops a few degrees below freezing, but very rarely drops below -5 °C (23 °F). Le record de froid est de -9,4 °C, enregistré en janvier 1979.

Lecce

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with rare rains.
The temperature is a little higher than on the coast, though, the breeze usually tempers the heat.
However, when the sirocco, the hot wind from Africa, blows, the temperature can reach or exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In June 2007 it reached 44 °C (111 °F), while in July 1987 it reached 44.4 °C (111.9 °F).

Best Time

To visit Lecce, you can choose the periods from mid-April to mid-May and from mid-September to mid-October, since in summer it can get very hot. It must be said that in both periods there may be rainy days.
The best months for a beach holiday on the coast are July and August. In June, the days are long and the weather is often good, but the sea is still a bit cool. You can still go in September, in fact the sea is still quite warm, but the days get shorter and the first waves of bad weather can occur, especially in the second half of the month.
