Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Fermo can be described as
transitional Mediterranean, since it has relatively mild winters and hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in central Italy, at an altitude of 200-300 meters (650-985 ft), and 6 km (3.7 mi) away from the coast of the Adriatic Sea, where Porto San Giorgio is located.
Winter, from December to February, is quite mild, however, due to the altitude and distance from the sea, it is a little colder than on the coast.
Snow in Fermo is not very frequent, however, during cold air irruptions from the north-east, sometimes snowfalls can be quite abundant, around 30-40 cm (12-15.5 in).
During
cold spells, which are becoming rarer due to global warming, the temperature can drop by several degrees below freezing.
The
summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with rare rainy days and a few thunderstorms coming from the Apennines.
The altitude slightly tempers the heat, moreover, in the afternoon the breeze blows from the sea. However, sometimes there can be very hot periods, and when the wind blows from the southwest, from the Apennines, the temperature can reach 38/40 °C (100/104 °F).
Best Time
The
best time to go to Porto San Giorgio for a beach holiday is the summer, especially in July and August, since they are the hottest and sunniest months of the year, and when the sea is warmest as well.
To visit Fermo, you can choose the periods from mid-April to mid-June and from early September to early October. However, some rainy days must be taken into account in both periods.
