Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours

The climate of Catanzaro is
Mediterranean, with mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
The city is the capital of the Calabria region and is located in southern Italy, on the first hills south of the Sila, at an altitude ranging from 200 to 500 meters (650 to 1,650 feet), even though the center is at 300 meters (1,000 ft). About 10 km (6 mi) to the south is the coast of the Gulf of Squillace (Ionian Sea). The so-called isthmus of Catanzaro is the narrowest part that separates the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is foumd 30 km (18 mi) away to the west, and the Ionian Sea.
The city is
windy, being exposed to winds from different sources.
Winter, from December to February, is mild, and is characterized by sunny periods alternating with rainy periods. Sometimes the rains can be abundant, and this can also happen in autumn, in October and in November. The heaviest rains can cause the overflowing of the streams that descend from the mountains.
Despite the mild climate, given the altitude and the position on the Ionian side, there can sometimes be
cold and windy periods, generally of short duration, with temperatures close to freezing even during the day, and during which can also snow.
On the coast of Catanzaro, snow is rarer, and for example it snowed in January 1999 and December 2010.
Typically, the temperature drops to a minimum of -2 °C (28 °F) during cold spells, however, it dropped to -6 °C (21 °F) in January 1968 and to -4.4 °C (24 °F) in January 2017.
Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with the sea breeze blowing regularly in the afternoon and with rare rains.
During
heat waves of African origin, the temperature can reach, and sometimes exceed, 40 °C (104 °F). In 2007, the temperature reached 40 °C (104 °F) in June, 42 °C (107.5 °F) in July and 39 °C (102 °F) in August.
Best Time
To visit Catanzaro, you can choose the periods from mid-April to mid-June and from September to early October. In June, the weather is often nice, but it can sometimes get hot, especially in the second half of the month.
The best months for a beach holiday on the coast are July and August. In June, the days are long and the weather is often good, but the sea is still a bit cool. You can still go in September, in fact the sea is still quite warm, but the days get shorter and the first waves of bad weather can occur, especially in the second half of the month.
