The climate of Caltanissetta can be defined as
Mediterranean, since it has mild, quite rainy winters and hot, sunny summers. However, there are some continental characteristics, since the summer is very hot and the winter can sometimes be cold.
The city is located in the center of Sicily, southwest of Enna and at an altitude of 570 metres (1,870 feet).
Winter, from December to February, is mild, and is characterized by sunny periods alternating with rainy periods. Sometimes
fog can form.
Temperatures are a little lower than at sea level, and during cold air irruptions, the cold is felt more. However, the temperature rarely drops below freezing. On New Year's Eve of 2014, it dropped to -4 °C (25 °F).
Snow in Caltanissetta is quite rare, however, it is more frequent than in the other provincial capitals of Sicily (apart from Enna). For example, in recent years it has snowed with an accumulation of a few centimeters (1 cm = 0.4 in) in late December 2014, in January 2017 and in January 2019. In January 2005, the snow reached 20 cm. In 2002, it snowed on March 25th.
Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with very rare rains.
Despite the altitude, it is often hot. Furthermore,
heatwaves of African origin can sometimes occur: in these cases, it is possible for the temperature to reach or exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In August 1999, the temperature reached as high as 46 °C (115 °F).
