The climate of Avellino can be defined as
transitional Mediterranean, given that it has relatively mild winters and hot, sunny summers. In addition, the rains are abundant, since they exceed 1,200 mm (47 in) per year.
The city is located in southern Italy, in Campania, at an altitude of 350 meters (1,150 feet), in a basin of the southern Apennines. To the north-west we find the Partenio mountains, while to the east we find the Picentini mountains.
The Sanctuary of Montevergine is located near the city, at an altitude of 1,250 metres (4,100 ft).
The province of Avellino is called Irpinia.
The
winter, from December to February, is quite mild, however, it depends on the period.
There are mild periods, in which the Atlantic currents prevail, during which there can also be rainy days.
During periods of stable weather, it can get cold at night, fog can form and the temperature can drop to the freezing point or slightly below.
On the other hand, during cold spells, the temperature can drop by several degrees, and it can even snow.
In fact, the
snow in Avellino occurs more often than in the other provincial capitals of Campania, and at times it can be abundant. In past decades, about 25 cm (10 in) of snow fell per year. In early December 1973, there was an exceptional snowfall, and the snow reached one and a half meters (5 feet) deep.
During cold waves, the temperature can drop by several degrees below freezing. In December 2010 it dropped to -9.5 °C (15 °F).
The
summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with rare rainy days and some thunderstorms coming from the Apennines.
At night the temperature drops a lot, but during the day it can be very hot, with highs of 36/37 °C (97/99 °F), and sometimes even 39/40 °C (102/104 °F).

The
best times to visit Avellino are spring and autumn, ie from mid-April to mid-June and from September to early October. In June, the weather is often nice, but it can sometimes get hot, especially in the second half of the month.
